The Balochistan cabinet, in a recent meeting chaired by Chief Minister Sarfraz Ahmed Bugti, approved the establishment of a Right to Information (RTI) Commission and passed the province’s inaugural digital social media policy. These initiatives aim to improve transparency, increase access to information, and formalize the province’s approach to digital governance.
The RTI Commission, set to be established under the Balochistan Right to Information Act of 2021, had faced delays in implementation. However, the recent decision includes amendments to existing laws, making it easier for citizens to access government documents. Khalil Ahmed, President of the Balochistan Union of Journalists (BUJ), praised the initiative, describing it as a significant step toward transparency. He noted that appointing experienced journalists to the commission would help guarantee public access to information.
In addition to the RTI Commission, the cabinet approved a digital social media policy—the first of its kind in the province. This policy establishes a framework to regulate social media, aiming to promote positive engagement while strengthening digital governance in Balochistan.
Both measures have been received as important steps toward ensuring accountability and enhancing the public’s access to official information.
