Peshawar, August 17, 2025:

Bishop Humphrey Sarfaraz Peters of the Church of Pakistan has urged the government to take concrete measures to protect the rights of religious minorities in Pakistan, calling for reforms that align with both the Constitution and Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s vision of equality and inclusion.

In a statement shared with The White Post, Bishop Peters highlighted several areas of concern. He appealed for the return of minority-run educational institutions that were nationalised in the 1970s, or fair restitution for their loss. He also stressed the need to finalise the issue of long-pending National Commission for Minorities Rights, insisting it must consist of independent and credible members with genuine enforcement powers.

Addressing the misuse of blasphemy laws, the Bishop recommended procedural reforms to prevent false accusations and called for swift and fair trials in such cases. He also drew attention to the issue of forced conversions and abductions, urging strict legal penalties for offenders, stronger victim protection mechanisms, and enhanced court oversight to prevent coerced marriages.

The Bishop further emphasised the importance of meaningful democratic representation for minorities. He suggested reviewing the process of minority seats in both National and Provincial assemblies to ensure members have real numbers and influence. He also called for greater protection of religious sites from encroachment and vandalism, along with consistent security arrangements.

Improved access to scholarships, housing, and social welfare programs was another area highlighted in his recommendations. He stressed that such programs should be streamlined to ensure they reach deserving minority citizens efficiently.

“These steps are essential to build a just and inclusive Pakistan, true to the vision of its founding father,” Bishop Peters concluded.
