On February 12, 2024, a conference themed on Religious Minorities Rights, held at a local hotel in Lahore. The event was Organized by the Implementation Minorities Right Forum (IMRF) in collaboration with Praise TV, the event centered on the theme “Constitutional Rights of Minorities and Responsibilities of the State of Pakistan.” The Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court, Muhammad Ameer Bhatti, graced the occasion as the chief guest.
Distinguished speakers at the conference included The Most Rev Dr. Azad Marshall, Pastor Shahzad Siddique, Peter Jacob, Executive Director of the Centre for Social Justice, Mr. Nadeem, Mr. Pervez Masih, and Adnan Shamim Bhatti, President of the Christian Lawyer’s Association of Pakistan.
The conference commenced with recitations from the Holy Quran and the Holy Bible, setting a tone of inclusivity and respect for diverse faiths. Samuel Payara, Chairman of IMRF, presented the organisation’s report, acknowledging the contributions of all participants and media representatives. Praise TV head, Pastor Shahzad Siddique showcased his charitable initiatives through a video presentation, highlighting the importance of community service.
Guest of Honour, Chief Justice Muhammad Ameer Bhatti Lahore High Court, underscored the constitutional guarantees ensuring equality for all citizens, irrespective of their faith, and stressed the collective responsibility to translate these principles into tangible actions, especially concerning minority rights. He invoked Jinnah’s vision of a just and inclusive society, urging concerted efforts towards its realization.
Additionally, Chief Justice Bhatti highlighted various constitutional provisions safeguarding minority rights and the judiciary’s pivotal role in upholding them. He referenced significant Supreme Court judgments, including Al-Jehad Trust v. Federation of Pakistan, supporting the appointment of non-Muslims as judges, and suo moto Case No.1 of 2014, addressing attacks on minority places of worship.
Moreover, Chief Justice Bhatti reiterated the moral and religious imperative to protect minority rights, emphasizing the collective responsibility of society and the state.
Bishop of Lahore, Rev. Dr. Azad Marshall referenced Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s historic speech from August 11, 1947, emphasizing the founder’s commitment to safeguarding the rights of minorities in Pakistan. Peter Jacob elaborated on constitutional protections for minorities, drawing attention to challenges in their implementation, particularly regarding Islamic studies in missionary schools. Adnan Shamim Bhatti expressed appreciation for IMRF’s initiative in convening the conference at a crucial juncture.
The conference concluded with Chief Justice Muhammad Ameer Bhatti honoring volunteer lawyers with shields in recognition of their tireless efforts in defending minority rights. Notable recipients included Adnan Shamim Bhatti, Kashif Niamat, Liaqat John, Niaz Amir, Ms. Rebecca Farhat, Imran Randhawa, Ms. Mishal Shams, Rev. Fr. Khalid Mukhtar, and Mr. Emmanuel Pervez, President of IMRF.
