The Centre for Peace and Development Initiatives (CPDI) convened a significant event focused on police reform in Lahore, bringing together a wide range of stakeholders to address the pressing issue of accountability within the police force. Titled “External Civilian Oversight and Accountability,” the event sought to explore ways to enhance the effectiveness and transparency of law enforcement in Punjab.
The gathering featured prominent participants, including current and former officers from the Police Service of Pakistan such as B.A. Nasir, Sarmad Saeed, and Ammara Athar. Abid Qureshi, a former district and session judge, along with lawyers, legal advisors, government officials, civil society representatives, and members of the media, also took part in the discussions. This diverse group ensured a well-rounded dialogue on the challenges and potential avenues for police reform in the province.
The event highlighted the importance of an accountable and community-focused policing system, emphasizing the need for external civilian oversight. The discussions centered on how transparency and public trust can be strengthened within the police force.
CPDI’s initiative fostered a constructive exchange among stakeholders, laying the groundwork for future reforms aimed at improving police effectiveness and accountability in Punjab.
