Lahore: The YMCA Lahore hosted a vibrant Independence Day celebration, drawing together people from various religious communities, including Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs, and Christians. The event underscored the unity and diversity of Pakistan’s society.
Punjab Minister for Human Rights and Minorities Affairs, Ramesh Singh Aurora, attended as the chief guest. Other notable guests included Rev Zaman Sultan, John William, Ghulam Nabi Rana, Rao Dilshad, Muhammad Zaman, and Saira Jehan.
During the event, YMCA General Secretary Emanuel Sarfraz highlighted the significant role the YMCA played in the country’s independence movement. He noted that a crucial decision to vote in favor of Pakistan was made at the YMCA Hall, during a meeting chaired by Speaker of the Punjab Assembly SP Singha and General Secretary Rallia Ram.
Minister Aurora commended the YMCA’s efforts in fostering religious harmony and emphasized the positive outlook of Pakistan’s youth. He mentioned that the government, led by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, has implemented several initiatives aimed at promoting religious harmony and providing opportunities for minorities to thrive. The minister affirmed that the protection and progress of minorities remain a top priority for the current administration.
Program Secretary YMCA Iram Nelson announced new initiatives, including the establishment of a gym and a planned hostel for women. The celebration, conducted in Punjabi, also featured a declamation contest, national songs, and a cultural presentation of folk dance and music by children.
