In an incident on December 3, 2023, in Viram Hathaar, Kasur, a Christian family faced an attack by a group of individuals, including Ashiq Ali, Bilal Ali, Bagh Ali, and Rashid Sardar Dogar. The assailants forcibly entered Zulifqar Masih’s home, a laborer and father of four, who had invested his life savings in acquiring a 4 Marla land in May 2019.
Armed with pistols and sticks, the attackers damaged the property, burning household items and demolishing walls. Zulifqar’s wife, Shazia, endured physical assault and humiliation in front of her children. Sharifan Bibi, Zulifqar’s mother, also faced an attack while trying to protect her daughter-in-law.
This incident, targeting one of the 30-35 Christian families in the area, reflects underlying religious and social tensions. The family, now living in fear, had to abandon their home and return to tenancy, disrupting their dream of homeownership. Despite efforts to suppress the incident, an FIR (No. 1648/23) was filed at Khudian police station, citing severe offenses under the Pakistan Penal Code.
This event highlights challenges faced by religious minorities in Pakistan, where land disputes can escalate into sectarian conflicts. The family seeks justice and support from the broader Christian community, emphasizing the need for a robust legal and social framework to protect vulnerable populations. Authorities and civil society responses to this attack will gauge the nation’s commitment to justice and human rights for all citizens.
