On the night of February 10, 2025, a violent attack in Gujranwala, Pakistan, left Pastor Shahbaz Barakat critically injured after he was shot by two masked assailants. The incident occurred around 10:15 PM as the Christian leader from Rahwali Christian Town was returning to his village, Kaliwala. He was rushed to Civil Hospital Gujranwala, where he underwent emergency surgery to remove a bullet and had a chest tube inserted. Despite medical efforts, his condition remains critical due to significant blood loss.

In the aftermath of the attack, Rev. Saleem Gill, District Superintendent of All Saints Church in Rahwali, visited Pastor Barakat’s family, offering condolences and affirming the Christian community’s collective support. “Pastor Barakat’s healing is in the hearts of many,” he stated, urging the family to remain hopeful.

Authorities have launched an investigation and registered a First Information Report (FIR) at Police Station Ghakhar Mandi under Sections 324 and 34 of the Pakistan Penal Code, which address attempted murder and shared criminal responsibility.

Despite the seriousness of the attack, Pastor Barakat stated that he had no known enemies and was targeted without reason. “I have been brutally attacked without any justification. I have no conflicts with anyone,” he said.

He also expressed disappointment in the lack of support from government institutions. “So far, I have received no assistance from any official body. It is my community of elders who have stood by me in this difficult time.” The pastor urged believers to pray for his recovery.

As the investigation continues, Christian leaders and local communities remain hopeful that the perpetrators will be brought to justice. Concerns over the safety of religious figures have intensified, with many calling for greater protection to prevent such attacks in the future.
