Lahore, 15 June 2024:
The Pakistan Masiha Millat Party (PMMP) has issued a call for significant changes in how sentry workers are supported during Eid. Aslam Pervaiz Sahotra, the founder of human rights within the party, has highlighted ongoing issues with the Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC), specifically regarding the provision of food and water to sentry workers on duty during Eid.
Sahotra acknowledged that while the initiative to provide food and water by LWMC is commendable, past implementations have been problematic. He noted that the quantity of food and water provided has often been insufficient and of substandard quality. Furthermore, there have been frequent complaints of fund misappropriation by LWMC officials responsible for these provisions.
In light of these concerns, Sahotra has made a formal demand to the Chief Minister of Punjab, the Chief Secretary of Punjab, the Secretary of Municipalities of Punjab, and the Managing Director of LWMC. He suggests that instead of distributing food and water directly, the government should transfer the equivalent monetary value directly to the accounts of the sentry workers. This measure would ensure that funds are not misappropriated and allow workers to purchase food of their choice as needed.
Sahotra emphasized that for the government’s zero waste campaign to be successful, there must also be a focus on “zero corruption.” He called for full salaries, gratuities, and pensions to be guaranteed for sentry workers, addressing widespread reports of significant embezzlement from these funds.
