Pope Francis, the first Latin American pontiff and a globally respected spiritual leader known for his advocacy for the poor, interfaith harmony, and social justice, has passed away at the age of 88, the Vatican confirmed on Monday.

The announcement was made early in the morning by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the Vatican camerlengo, who declared:
“Dear brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis. At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His whole life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and His Church.”

Cardinal Farrell paid tribute to the Pope’s enduring legacy, saying, “He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage, and universal love, especially in favour of the poorest and most marginalized.”

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Argentina, Pope Francis made history in 2013 by becoming the first non-European pope in nearly 1,300 years and the first Jesuit to lead the Roman Catholic Church. His pontificate, marked by humility and reform, brought a shift in tone and priorities within the Church, emphasizing mercy, compassion, and outreach to the marginalized.

His death comes just weeks after he was discharged from a hospital in Rome, where he had been treated for pneumonia affecting both lungs. Though initially reported as stable and recovering at his Vatican residence, his health deteriorated rapidly.

Pope Francis frequently used his platform to speak out for those on the peripheries of society, including migrants, refugees, the poor, and victims of injustice. He also strongly advocated for environmental protection and was a vocal critic of global inequality.

In his final years, the Pope continued to be a polarizing figure, particularly among conservative circles. His progressive stance on issues such as LGBTQ+ rights, immigration, and the handling of clergy abuse scandals sparked intense debate within the Church, especially among some factions in the United States.

For Christians in Pakistan and other parts of the Global South, Pope Francis was seen as a unifying figure who often highlighted the struggles of persecuted religious minorities. His calls for interreligious dialogue, peace, and tolerance struck a chord in regions where religious freedom remains under pressure.

The passing of Pope Francis initiates the traditional process of mourning and transition. Cardinals from around the world will soon arrive in Rome to participate in the papal conclave, the sacred assembly tasked with selecting the next leader of the Catholic Church.

For the Catholic community in Pakistan, the loss is deeply felt. Local church leaders have expressed condolences and announced special prayer services to honor the memory and legacy of a pope who, despite global responsibilities, never ceased to raise his voice for the dignity of every human life.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the Vatican in the coming hours.
