Police in Peshawar arrested a man accused of committing blasphemy, on Tuesday, thwarting a mob that had gathered to lynch him, according to authorities.
The man, identified as Humayun Ullah, was detained in Khazana, a suburb of Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, said police officer Nasir Khan. The arrest occurred as a crowd attempted to seize him on a public street.
Footage shared on social media showed hundreds of protesters blocking a road near the local police station, demanding that authorities hand over the suspect.
Gunfire could be heard in the vicinity of the station, where the accused was being held for questioning.
According to Khan, the incident stemmed from a heated argument between an arrested man and his brother at their home, during which he allegedly made derogatory remarks regarding religion.
The protest escalated as some demonstrators threw stones at the police station and threatened to set it on fire if their demands were not met.
