In a bid to raise awareness about the pressing issues surrounding animal welfare, a seminar titled “Media Awareness on Animal Health Challenges” was held at Faletti’s Hotel, attracting a diverse audience of 25 individuals representing various ethnic backgrounds.

Mr. Sheraz Hasnath, Bureau Chief of Hum News Lahore and Senior Vice President of Lahore Press Club, set the tone for the event with his opening address, extending a warm welcome to all participants.

The seminar kicked off with a thought-provoking session led by Mr. Naeem, Advocacy Manager at Brooke Pakistan, shedding light on the hurdles faced by working animals, notably horses and donkeys. Mr. Naeem emphasized the critical role these animals play in the livelihoods of approximately 1.3 billion people in Pakistan, yet highlighted the persistent challenges in ensuring their proper health care, including limited access to veterinary services and medications. He stressed the urgent need for government intervention to expand veterinary services across the nation.

Dr. Manuchahar, Program Officer at Brooke Pakistan, delved into the realm of zoonotic diseases and prevalent animal illnesses, including HIV, Rabies, Congo Fever, Trypanosomiasis, Babesiosis, Anthrax, Tuberculosis, Glanders, and Tetanus. Underlining the significance of the One Health concept, Dr. Manuchahar emphasized the interconnectedness of animal and human health for effective disease prevention and control strategies.

Mr. Sheraz Hasnath reiterated the importance of crafting news stories tailored to resonate with the interests of the target audience, while also advocating for the utilization of Right to Information (RTI) laws to safeguard freedom of speech. Dr. Iqbal, Director General of Extension at the Planning & Development Department, graced the event as the Chief Guest, shedding light on the current resources and government efforts towards enhancing the livestock sector, despite challenges posed by limited funding and resources.

The seminar concluded on a high note with the distribution of participation certificates and a group photo session, followed by a networking lunch. Attendees were encouraged to continue leveraging their platforms to spotlight the challenges faced by animals, recognizing their indispensable role in society.
