Islamabad:
The Sohail sisters, who recently won 15 gold medals at the Asian Pacific African Combined Powerlifting Championship in South Africa, have been awarded Rs 200,000 each in recognition of their outstanding achievements. The sisters, who have consistently raised Pakistan’s flag high on international platforms, were also acknowledged by the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) for their accomplishments.
The sisters’ success has brought attention to the need for greater institutional support for athletes who excel on the global stage. According to WAPDA regulations, the Sohail sisters are eligible for Grade 18 positions in their parent department, a matter that is now under consideration by WAPDA’s leadership.
In a statement to The Nation, the Sohail sisters expressed pride in their achievements and reiterated their commitment to winning more medals for Pakistan. “We have already set a record by winning numerous gold medals at international powerlifting events, and we remain committed to securing more medals for our homeland in future competitions,” they said.
Their call for better support from WAPDA, the government, and corporate sponsors reflects a broader conversation about the resources and recognition needed to sustain and encourage high-level athletic performance in Pakistan.
