Mr. Waris, would you like to tell us about your educational background and musical journey?
I graduated from GC University, where I was admitted on a music scholarship. My musical journey began in childhood, learning from my father, who was also a musician. His passion and skill deeply inspired me, and I developed a strong interest in music from a young age. At GC University, I participated in and won numerous music competitions, further honing my craft.
When did you decide to pursue music professionally, and what motivated that decision?
I made the decision to pursue music professionally in 2018. The constant encouragement and positive feedback from my performances, as well as my passion for music, motivated me to take this step.
You mentioned that your younger brother and sister are also musically inclined. How has your family influenced your musical career?
My family has been a significant influence on my musical career. My younger brother, Sultan Waris, is a singer, and my sister, Sameera Waris, plays the tabla and has worked with major brands in Pakistan. Growing up in a musical environment with such talented family members has always encouraged and inspired me to excel in my craft.
What challenges have you faced in your musical career, and how have you overcome them?
One of the biggest challenges has been establishing myself in a competitive industry. However, with persistent effort, practice, and leveraging social media to showcase my talent, I have been able to build a following and gain recognition. Additionally, balancing my time between performing and teaching has required effective time management and dedication.
What future do you envision for yourself in the field of music?
I see a bright future in music. Given the positive reception at my performances and events, I am confident that my dedication will lead to more significant opportunities. I plan to continue exploring different musical genres and collaborating with artists both locally and internationally.
Who are some of the notable artists you have worked with, and how have these collaborations impacted your career?
I have had the privilege of collaborating with several artists, including the esteemed Indian tabla player Parvez Hussain. These collaborations have not only broadened my musical horizons but have also helped me gain exposure and recognition in the international music scene.
Could you share some memorable performances or events that have been milestones in your career?
One of the most memorable performances was at the All Pakistan Music Conference, where I competed against many talented artists from Punjab and won. Performing at large gatherings, such as the concert with an audience of about 5,000 people, was also a significant milestone. Additionally, my performances on various TV channels and morning shows have been crucial in my career development.
What are some of your popular songs available on social media, and how has the response been?
I have released several covers and original compositions on social media. A year ago, I composed and released three ghazals that received a great response. Currently, I am working on projects paying tribute to legendary Pakistani artists like Mehdi Hasan, Ghulam Ali, and Madam Noor Jahan.
How has social media influenced your musical career, and what platforms do you actively use?
Social media has been instrumental in my career. It has allowed me to reach a wider audience and connect with fans globally. I am active on platforms like Facebook, where I have 7,000 followers, and I recently joined TikTok to further expand my reach.
What advice would you give to young musicians aspiring to make it in the industry?
I would advise young musicians to be patient and dedicated to their craft. The industry is fast-paced, but success comes with time and effort. Focus on honing your skills, learning from experienced teachers, and working independently. Utilize platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and Facebook to showcase your talent and earn money. Most importantly, maintain a balance between education and music, as it is crucial for long-term success.
How do you see the role of music in bringing about social change, especially within the Christian community?
Music has the power to bring people together and inspire change. I have produced several gospel songs and plan to continue using music to uplift and empower the Christian community. Through music, we can promote messages of hope, unity, and understanding.
What are your future plans and aspirations in music, and how do you intend to achieve them?
My future plans include continuing to perform, compose, and collaborate with other artists. I aim to pay tribute to legendary musicians and explore new genres. I will achieve these goals by staying dedicated to my practice, engaging with my audience through social media, and seizing opportunities for collaboration and performance.
Can you describe your daily practice routine and how you maintain your musical skills?
My practice routine varies depending on my schedule. On days without events, I practice for five to six hours, focusing on technique and new compositions. On busier days with events or concerts, I ensure to practice for at least two hours to maintain my skills. Consistency and dedication are key to my practice regimen.
How do you balance your roles as a performer and a music instructor, and what challenges do you face in this dual role?
Balancing my roles as a performer and a music instructor requires effective time management and dedication. The challenge lies in ensuring that I give my best to both my students and my performances. By creating a structured schedule and staying committed to both roles, I can manage my responsibilities effectively. Teaching also provides me with a fresh perspective and keeps me connected to the fundamentals of music.
What impact do you hope to have on your students as a music instructor, and how do you inspire them?
As a music instructor, I hope to instill a deep appreciation and love for music in my students. I aim to inspire them by sharing my passion, experiences, and the importance of dedication and practice. By providing a supportive and encouraging learning environment, I help them build their confidence and skills, preparing them for their musical journeys.
