Bannu, Pakistan:
At least five protestors were killed and over 20 injured after security personnel allegedly opened fire on peaceful demonstrators in Bannu. Thousands had gathered to demand an end to militancy and further security operations, voicing their desire for peace and stability in the region, said the press release
The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has condemned the incident, labeling it a violation of citizens’ rights to life and freedom of peaceful assembly. “This reflects a dangerous contempt for citizen-led calls for peace,” the HRCP stated.
In response, the HRCP has called for the provincial and federal governments to engage with the protestors and address their concerns.
They also urged accountability for those responsible for the deaths and injuries. The HRCP emphasized that any actions to restore law and order must be debated transparently in Parliament and consider the rights of those affected.
