PR Lahore, July 1, 2026:

A 60-year-old Christian man, Amir Peter, who was facing blasphemy charges in Pakistan, died on Wednesday at a hospital while in custody after suffering from severe medical complications, according to the advocacy organization Christians’ True Spirit (CTS).

CTS said Amir Peter had been arrested on July 19, 2025, after local shopkeepers accused him of committing blasphemy. The organization stated that he had been diagnosed with advanced dementia and experienced deteriorating physical and mental health throughout his detention.

According to CTS, the organization had been providing legal assistance to Amir Peter and had filed a post-arrest bail petition on medical grounds, arguing that his health condition warranted his release. However, he died before the court reached a decision on the application.

In a statement issued following his death, CTS alleged that Amir Peter did not receive the urgent medical care his condition required and described his death as highlighting concerns over the treatment of vulnerable detainees and the alleged misuse of Pakistan’s blasphemy laws.

The organization called on the authorities to conduct a transparent inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Amir Peter’s death and urged measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

CTS also expressed condolences to Amir Peter’s family, including his younger brother, Fr. Hanry Paul OFM, Parish Priest of St. Francis Church in Kot Lakhpat, Lahore, and appealed to supporters to keep the family in their prayers.

As of publication, there has been no official statement from the police or prison authorities regarding the circumstances of Amir Peter’s death or CTS’s allegations.
